The Eurasian Studies Initiative of the strategic studies programme aims to promote research on issues of Europe, Russia, and Central Asian regions.
This initiative focuses on a range of political, economic and security issues emanating in the region. With its strategic location, the Eurasian region continues to remain a critical geography for countries due to its hydrocarbon resources, geoeconomic potential and geostrategic location. The European part of Eurasia is well integrated with the global supply and value chains, while the other geographies are showing promise, with considerable interest from nations across the region. Despite the volatility caused by sanctions, intraregional disputes, and ailing infrastructure in some parts, the potential for growth and development is reason for optimism.
Key Areas of Research
The Initiative's strategic focus is India's bilateral relations with respective countries and connectivity projects, such as the International North-South Trade Corridor, the Middle Corridor and the Belt and Road Initiative. Furthermore, the emphasis on regional initiatives for integration and the role of multilateral organisations such as the European Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Eurasian Economic Union, etc., along with the broader steps India took in the region under different multilateral and bilateral agreements, underscores the strategic significance of these efforts, providing reassurance about their effectiveness.
