Professor Ronán Long is the Director of the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute at the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden. He leads an interdisciplinary research team at the interface of science, policy, and law to address contemporary challenges in ocean governance and the Law of the Sea, with research addressing climate action, gender equality, and sustainable ocean use, with a focus on supporting small island developing states and coastal least developed countries. His work contributes to key international processes, including the BBNJ Agreement, the UN Decade of Ocean Science, the World Ocean Assessment, and ongoing treaty negotiations to end plastic pollution. He has authored over 15 books and 100 scholarly articles. Professor Long holds a PhD in law from Trinity College Dublin, and has a background as an Irish Naval Officer and former European Commission official.
