Former premier Muhammad Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan after eight years of exile and vowed to contest the general elections. He said all decisions regarding participation in polls would be made on the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM)'s platform.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan dismissed the last pending challenge to General Pervez Musharraf's re-election, but announced that it would hand down a short order, clearing the final obstacle to his becoming civilian president.

Journalists across the country came out on to the streets protesting the blanket ban on the media imposed by President Musharraf. Although the rallies and protest marches in different parts of the country were peaceful, Karachi witnessed minor violence.
